Musical Monday: Twilight Edition!

Hosted by Jori and Diane

Yes, that's right! I was at Books-a-Million at midnight on Friday night to get my very own copy of the Twilight dvd! I also met Valarie Lea ~ but I'll save that post until I can snag a photo from her. Lucas and I watched the movie on Saturday, then I watched all the extras that came on the special features disc (while Lucas slept). One of the features... interviews and music video from Paramore. Love the song.. and the video!

Do you tweet?

I am twittering on Twitter. I have tweeted around and found a few of you twits but am looking for more. If you are a twitterer then tweet on over to my Twitter so I can tweet back to you.

So blogging about Twitter has apparently become the cool thing to do. I am behind on the Twitter buzz and just started my account. You can find my Twitters over there on the right. I also downloaded the app for my Blackberry. So I think I'm getting the hang of this thing.

I stole this video from Julie. Twitterer or not - you must check it out.

Also, don't forget to help me out in my search for a new name. You've come up with some great suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming!

New Name, New Blog.... With your help

When I started blogging I thought this would be a good way to record what is going on in our life and be able to reflect personally on what we have done. I was clueless to the world that was 'the blogosphere'. Then, I found you. I found SITS. I started commenting. And before I knew it - I had friends! (I mean - suddenly I had friends online from all over the country and world. I had real-world friends before the blog. Really, I did......)

While 'The Linares Family' blog has served its purpose, I'm ready to move on to a more descriptive - or shall we so - more anonymous blog. In the process, I'd like to have my very own domain name and spiff up my blog a little. This is where you come in....

What should I name this blog of mine?
It seems I am creative when given parameters but it is hard for me to pull things from the air. I just don't know where to start. Please help me!

If I pick your suggested name there will be a nice little prize that is tailored to your interests... meaning I don't have anything right off hand to give away but I'll find something really great for you if you pull through!

So EVERYONE put on your thinking, creative hats and let's create a new blog personality for The Linares Family.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

***At Ruthanne's request I'm going to throw in a little more details. I've thought about trying to name our blog around our marriage: you know - he's from South American, I'm from the South... type thing. We both play tennis and that's how we met. So that's one angle. I blog about random happenings and family... maybe one day in the not too distant future about a growing family. *hint**nudge**wink* Hehe!! Thanks for your help!!

Basic Social Rules Revisited

Facebook, Twitter, emails, text messaging, chatting, blogging..... we have certainly come a long way with communication technologies. But what happened to the basic form of communication: talking? More specifically: what has happened in society that has separated basic personal communication from the dating world?

Fortunately, I have found my Prince Charming (though some days I may call him Prince of anything other than charming). I no longer have to worry about how I'll meet guys, how we'll have those serious conversations, when our relationship is ready for the next step, and when it is time to throw in the towel. But several of my friends are dealing with these very issues. In a time when Match.com introduces more people than mutual friends and relationships aren't official until they are on Facebook, talking has been downgraded to an 'only when necessary' activity.

I know this is a groundbreaking suggestion, but how bout you people in the dating world relegate subjects of a more serious matter to face-to-face conversations? I know, right? Take some time..... let that sink in......

......

Moving on, I don't want one more friend coming to me and telling me they got dumped through an email or through Facebook. That is just insane! Man up, people! If you are in a committed relationship with someone, they deserve your decency and respect. They deserve the final closure a face-to-face conversation can bring. An email saying 'sorry, it's not gonna work' doesn't cut it. Period.

Believe me - I know that conversation is hard. You want to avoid the confrontation. You don't know how to begin, what to say, how to console, when to leave, etc. But these are growing pains that we all have to go through. A rite of passage through the dating world.

Bottom line is this: don't let technology make you a rude, inconsiderate coward.

You know who you are. And, yes - I just called you a coward. I'm sure if you had any manhood left that would've hurt.

Cruise vs. All Inclusive - Part II

So yesterday I talked about cruising. Today I'm talking about the all inclusive resort.

The All-Inclusive Resort

I have to tell you, there won't be as much to say about this one. You stay. You relax. You sunbathe. You drink. You eat.

Resorting is what you think about when you think of the term 'relax'!

You are at one resort and you have no timetables until you leave. Dinner (unless you make a reservation at a specialty restaurant) is at no particular time, you don't have porting and departure times, there are no urgent concerns that require your attention. At a resort, you can arrive and never look at a clock. Never know what day it is, what time it is. To me, that is so relaxing.

You can do absolutely nothing at all at a resort. Or you can jam-pack it with excursions. On a cruise, you feel more obligated to partake in excursions. You stop at a port and only have so long to enjoy it. You don't want to sit on the boat while it is docked in Jamaica do you? Well, at a resort - why leave?

We did take part in several activities: whale watching, a kayaking and snorkeling trip, and a Jeep adventure. But you certainly don't have to. In that sense - this trip was much more relaxing for us.

This might depend on the resort you stay at - but the food at our resort was not near as good as the food on the cruise. You could make reservations to the specialty restaurants. Food there was better than the buffet food. And it was free... but book your reservations early. They fill up quickly.

To make up for the average food - there was all you can drink anything you want. Other than the wine - which was horrific (and trust me, I'm definitely not a wine snob) - every drink I had was stellar! And you can have as much as you want.... anything you can imagine: Beer, Margarita, Piña Colada, Rum and Coke, shot, whatever.... all free.

Did I mention the wet bar in every room? We never even tapped the liquor in our room. Liquor dispensers with rum, vodka, whisky, and tequila... right in your very room. Refilled every day. Oh - and the fridge, with water, sodas, and all the XX beer you can drink.

Though the price of an all inclusive resort is a bit more, it is totally worth it to me. You can order a drink or pull a beer out of the fridge without thinking twice. No number crunching to figure out how much you've spent or how much money you should be spending a day on drinks. Just drink. For a cheap person like me - that is the ultimate in relaxation. I don't have to worry about how much it costs? Sign me up!! Now - don't go overboard or you'll end up puking in your cup (and - sorry for this image - overflowing onto yourself and your towel b/c the cups are so small) poolside like one gentleman. EEk!!

Of course, if drinking isn't your thing, I don't think an all-inclusive is completely necessary. But - then again - if drinking isn't your thing you should probably loosen up and have a margarita (or two) while on vacation. I'm just sayin'...

Also, nightlife on the resort was pretty much non-existent... and that was okay. There were shows that were just horrible. I don't want to tell you about the Broadway Review we saw. I heard there was a nightclub but we never made it that far. The resort was much more of a daytime place. We layed out and drank margaritas and piña coladas all day. The sun had wore us out before night had come. It was nice to just get into bed early and get lots of rest for the next day.

So... that's about it. I feel like I had so much more to say about the cruise. I guess the cruise was more exciting. There were more adventures. We visited Miami, Jamaica, and the Caymans in one trip. But I have to tell you: I think the resort beats the cruise in my mind.

Let's make a list:

CRUISE

Pros
  • Visit multiple places
  • Exciting excursions
  • Great Food
  • Good nightlife
  • Can be done cheap(er)
Cons
  • Drinks can be pricey
  • Not so relaxing
  • Lots of people on one boat

RESORT

Pros
  • FREE Drinks!
  • Relaxing or Adventurous - you choose
  • No schedule
  • Did I mention the free drinks?
Cons
  • Can be pricey up front
  • Food not great (at our resort)
  • No nightlife (didn't bother us)
  • You have to leave eventually

Remember - this is just our opinion. It could solely be based on the cruise line or resort we stayed at. I have, after all, heard some horror story about cruising - mostly through Carnival. We did Royal Caribbean and would definitely recommend using them. I've also heard some resort horror stories or reports of bad weather for an entire trip. Here is an interesting tip about Cabo - it is a desert and it only rains 8 days a year there. We went in the winter with temps in the 90s. Summer temps in the 120s. I say chances look pretty good that you'll have good weather. Bottom line: research the locale, the time of year and weather when you are traveling, and the company you are entrusting with your vacation.

Either way, I say reward yourself with a trip. Whatever fits in your budget or suits your lifestyle. It can be costly but so rewarding! And you deserve it!!

Musical Mondays: Cry For Help?

Hosted by Jori and Diane

Almost forgot about Musical Mondays today and I just saw an interesting interview between Ellen and P Diddy over at Scribe's place. So the Rihanna - Chris Brown Debacle is on my mind. I can't believe all the things I've heard about this situation. So sad. Such a horrible example each one of them has shown to young, impressionable minds. I thought I'd put a Rihanna song up when the song 'S.O.S.' came to mind. Was it a cry for help? Doubt it. But so fitting now - with a whole new meaning.

Cruise vs. All Inclusive - Part I

If you've been reading, you've seen the highlights of our recent travels. Lucas and I have been very lucky. We love to travel and have cruised to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on our first anniversary and celebrated our second anniversary in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

I was excited to experience both cruising and staying at a resort and determine which we would prefer to do more of in the future. So - now that I know what we prefer - I'll pass along all the info I can to help you plan your next vacation. Of course, this is totally going off my opinion and our preferences so you'll want to decide what is best for your family based on your preferences and desired activities.

I’ll start by telling you that both experiences were fantastic!

Cruising

Our cruise was my first time out of the country other than our visits to Colombia. I was so excited to be able to visit multiple places in one trip!

This is the same trip we took in February of 2008. We had a Jr. Suite with balcony.

Two thoughts on upgrading your room:
  1. The room was beautiful and we loved being able to open the doors to the ocean or sit on the balcony and enjoy the view.
  2. We actually weren't in our rooms too much so I still am undecided about whether it was worth it to upgrade.
My suggestion: If you are trying to go cheap, you should still have a great time with an inner cabin. If you have it and want it, spend it.

Our ship was gigantic! But there were tons of people on the boat. Loungers are set up side-by-side around the pool area and on the upper deck. On cruising days, it is very hard to find an isolated lounger. So be prepared to lay out right next to a stranger and make friends. That is – if you want to lay out at all.

I love laying out but found the boat a less than ideal spot. We did a bit of sunbathing but it is quite windy on the deck while cruising. Instead, we filled much of our cruising time with other activities: ping pong, putt-putt golf, rock-climbing, shows, and – of course – eating.

The food was fantastic… and never ending. Buffet upon buffet of anything you could desire. You could go to the buffet for dinner, as well, or go to the dining room during your assigned meal-time. At dinner, menus are distributed and you order four courses. Still hungry? Want to try more than one entrée or desert? Order two. It really is great. And quality didn’t seem to suffer at all.

There are a couple of specialty restaurants where you have to make a reservation and it does cost. We never ate there. The free food was tremendous so why pay?

There are also other services on the ship: like exercise classes and a health and beauty spa. Lucas and I treated ourselves to a massage for our anniversary. It was good but pricey.

Our most exciting stop was Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Now – the cruise line tries to get you to purchase your excursions from them ahead of time. The main advantage to ordering through your cruise line is that if something happens and you are delayed on the main land – the cruise ship will wait on your group for departure. However, you pay a good bit more for the excursion and don’t always get the best tour.

You know I’m cheap so I searched around for activities online and found some great reviews for an individual tour guide. We found Phil Lafayette and his daughter, Tammy, online along with tons of great reviews and not a single negative review to be found. I have to tell you – this was the best tour ever.
When we discussed our excursion with other cruise ship passengers, we were definitely the envy of the trip. We paid a third what the cruise line wanted to charge and had the best most personable tour of Ocho Rios filled with all the exciting activities. If you are going to Ocho Rios – use Phil. If not, you can definitely find good tour guides for a cheaper price and much better trip than through the cruise line. Make sure you check out the reviews, but a good tour guide will definitely have you back to your ship in time so that really shouldn’t worry you too much when purchasing excursions independently.

Most cruise ship stops give you a full eight to nine hours on land. It isn’t really enough time to do everything you might want to do, but it is enough time to give you a taste of what is offered.

Our next stop was Grand Cayman Islands. We purchased a cruise line excursion at this stop. The pricing wasn’t too bad but the quality of the tour and the tour guides was less than stellar. Nonetheless, we had a great time. And now we know.

Cruising was pretty fun. We really enjoyed the nightlife. There was a dance club, a bar with a live band, and several bars including those with individual musicians. Our favorite was the piano bar. Of course it is a cruise ship so the same entertainers are on board. Every night we ended up at this little piano bar where patrons made requests and everyone sang along as he played the selections. So much fun!

There was also shopping on board, including a duty free store from which we were able to fully stock our liquor cabinets.

I really thought while sailing that we’d feel the boat moving more so than we did. There were only a couple of times that the motion became clear. Taking a shower in the tiny little bathroom let you know pretty quickly you were on a moving ship. Also, the boat seemed to move more at night. While I first wrote this off as the drinks, we eventually hypothesized that the boat was just moving faster at night. Who knows the real answer…. I’m sure someone does.

Now – the major downside. While the initial price of cruising can be cheaper, the final price gets driven dramatically up if you plan on drinking. The first day we purchased a ‘Coke’ wristband. I think it cost $14 each and we got a nifty thermos and a wristband, which entitled us to all the coke we could drink while there. That isn’t too bad. But alcoholic beverages are crazy. Well, maybe it isn’t crazy but after five nights and six days of cruising – it can get pretty pricey. Plan on paying $5-7 for a drink + tip. Do the math based on how much you’ll drink but don’t forget: a couple little fruity drinks by the pool, plus a bottle of wine at dinner, plus drinks at a bar afterward can equal a pretty pricey day. Multiply by 5. ☺

I’m quite long winded so I’ll save the rest for tomorrow. Stay tuned for my pros and cons of the all-inclusive and my final comparison.
