Birthdays

We had two birthdays this week!

Monday, we celebrated my dad's birthday by eating some Mexican food! What better way to celebrate any occasion? He and Lucas participated in Happy Hour! I'm ready for Lily Ann to arrive so I can participate in the occasional Happy Hour, as well! He followed up dinner with a free birthday shot of tequila! Oh my goodness! Too much for my poor daddy I think!

I followed Monday's Mexican with leftovers for lunch on Tuesday and Mexican again on Wednesday night. Hey.... I'm pregnant. I can do what I want. ;)

Tuesday was our little Rafa's 2nd Birthday! He wasn't spoiled with a party all his own and doggy cupcakes like last year. Sorry, Rafa. Momma's been a little busy lately. But we did give him lots of loving, lots of cookies, and one of his favorite big bones which he scarfed down pretty quickly for such a small dog.

Birthdays are fun! And in less than 2 weeks ~ we'll have a big birthday to celebrate!

Just a few things to look forward to...

Did you know that we only have 4 more days until we find out if we are having a boy or girl? How exciting is that?!? I can barely stand it. We are leaving the imaging center and heading directly to the mall to hopefully do a little bit of damage! I haven't really bought anything for the baby and I am ready to go crazy (modestly crazy if the husband is reading this)!!

Then two days later we'll be heading back to Nashville for mom's surgery. She visited with a specialist at Vanderbilt and he thinks he has figured out her mysterious illness. She is having a nasal/sinus surgery along with some reconstructive nose surgery. Who knew the secret to her health depended upon a nose job? Hehe!

After a successful straight-A first semester, I'm ready to continue progress on my MBA ~ especially now that there is a little one on the way.

Are you ready for some football? We sure are! Football is HUGE down South and we are ready for some big parties to celebrate!

Did I mention football? Did I mention - ROLL TIDE?!? On September 12th we are heading to Tuscaloosa for my very first college football game! So excited to see my team stomp all over our opponent (even if it is just FIU)! Rammer Jammer, Yellowhammer!

Oh, and one more little thing. It is a little bit further down the road but no countdown could be complete without it:

Check Us Out @ NEWLYWEDS!

Hello to everyone coming over from NEWLYWEDS!

We are the featured couple today on Jenna's Meet the Newlyweds segment!

We've been married for over two years now, but I still feel like a Newlywed! :)

I am usually a very regular blogger, but this week has been a wild one and blogging has fallen off quite drastically. Hopefully things will slow down a bit and my blogging will pick back up soon. Blogging is my tool to reflect on what is going on in our lives, and I desperately need it now.

Several of my regulars have asked about my mom, so I thought I'd give you a quick update. The previous diagnosis of immunodeficiency disorder - while it may be correct - did in no way help her situation. So we are still looking for answers on why she is so sick and how we can make her better. But good news - we went to Vanderbilt on Tuesday to see a specialist. He has pinpointed the problem in her nose and sinuses. She will have surgery in August and hopefully put an end to all this crazy sickness. Her new doctor there is crazy smart and feels confident he can take care of her problems. Thank you!

Also going on in our lives right now - a major bathroom renovation. The shower pan in our master bathroom shower was leaking so now we have to take out all of the tile. So we are completely renovating our shower with new tile and fixtures (and plumbing), replacing our toilet, replacing our sink and faucet, replacing all the fixtures in the bathroom, and freshening it up with a nice coat of paint (color still undetermined). Then, I think we'll need new blinds and window treatments. Why not?

If you didn't think that was enough - I'm currently enrolled in my first semester of graduate school. I'll be taking two courses a semester so I can finish my MBA in about a year! However, I didn't take into consideration that summer courses cover the same material in half the time. So my first semester of school includes two courses with 16 weeks of material crammed into 8. Oh, and I am getting all the hard stuff out of the way first. So that 8 weeks is crammed full of Accounting and Finance! Blah!

So now I have to get back to my Finance. I have so much work due by Midnight tonight and still haven't finished. Oh, yea.... and I have to work, too!

Sorry, enough moaning and complaining. But we have lots of exciting things going on!

Welcome to our crazy life!

My Wednesday Nights...

(Yes, Lucas is wearing a motorcycle helmet. No Lucas does not now - nor will he ever - own or drive a motorcycle.)

E
very week, our tight group of friends goes to eat Mexican on Wednesday nights. We have coined these our "family dinners", with Lucas and I and our rambunctious 'sons'. Kyle (bottom right) is the problem child and always misses out. But he is leaving us soon for a job in Boston, so he decided he would return to the family for the last few weeks.

This week we all watched Lucas play soccer after work (where he scored a goal - Go Lucas!) then headed over to the restaurant. Over dinner - we discuss work, life, and of course - girls. There are serious moments and there are hilarious moments. We are there to support (or harass) each other through them all. But nothing leaves the table. Everything discussed stays 'within the family'.

I love having these boys around. They are so much fun and truly good friends! Kyle, we are going to miss you!

Putt-Putting for 4 (+1)

Last weekend we ate some Mexican food with our favorite couple then headed out to play some putt-putt. Spring is here and the weather is nice (or at least it was then... it is rainy now) so it is finally time to have some fun outdoors nights!

Scorekeeper for the night... I should've worked a little magic and made myself the winner. The six shots on one hole really screwed me for the rest of the game.

Beach Trip Celebrations

Back in the college days, we would celebrate Spring Break in the typical old fashion way....

BEACH TRIP!

Spring Break 2004 - Gulf Shores

Spring Break 2005 - Panama City (in true PCB fashion)

Spring Break 2006 - Gulf Shores

As we are getting older (and there is no longer any such thing as a Spring Break), we find new things to celebrate in the same old fashion way...

In 2007, we celebrated a graduation...
and a bachelorette...
with what else but a
BEACH TRIP!

And now - in 2009 - this girl...
this tiny, little girl
who was then a bachelorette...
is now a mommy-to-be!

And we will celebrate with a
BEACH TRIP!

And this beautiful girl here in the middle...
is GRADUATING! AGAIN!
This time with her Masters Degree from some big, fancy D.C. university!

And that's not all (no, we have a lot to be thankful for in our group)....

This girl -
is getting married!!

We are celebrating all these things and more with a
BEACH TRIP!

In one month, we'll be lying on the beautiful white sands of the Gulf of Mexico!

I can't wait to celebrate with such a beautiful group of girls that I am so proud to call my friends. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments girls!! Get ready!!

Easter... and a few other happenings

We celebrated Easter as we usually do - with a family lunch at my grandparents.

I love them...
Them, too...
And a family shot of us (with a sneak peak of some Easter goodies)...
I got to play with Karson (probably one of my favorite things to do)...
Secret: If you hold the dog and the baby at the same time
there is no barking or crying. An Easter miracle!

My grandparents keep him twice a week and he is in love with them...

The Easter Bunny was good to us this year.

Rafa is getting a little help with his present. He got a new collar and some treats.
Lucas scored big time - hat, shirt, candy, overalls. Yes - OVERALLS! They are hilarious!
And I did very well if I do say so myself: candy, jewelry, new purse, and some Tevas! I love my Tevas!
See my purse there on the ground. It is super cute!
Here is a better shot of it since I am carrying it today.

One last family photo with our little bunny...

And a couple random photos from this weekend:

The happy, old married couple out Friday night with friends

We had a special treat Saturday night. We stayed at Chris and Aida's, grilled out, and helped paint the nursery for Baby Landon!

I forgot to take pictures of the painting but got a few pics while taking down the tape...
Even the dogs get in on the action...

Hope your Easter weekend was filled with lots of fun, too!

Junk Food Frenzy!!

Saturday we had a great Junk Food Party to celebrate my new smile and all the things I can eat with it now. We look for any reason to have a good time.

As with any good party, there was birthday cake. This all stems from my marathon party (told you we look for any reason). Brandon ordered a "Congrats on running 26.2" cake. He picked it up without looking at it (such a man). When we opened up to celebrate it said "Happy Birthday Ashley". Haha! Okay. So, we have another birthday cake to celebrate the new smile! I told Brandon I should get a "Congrats on 26.2" cake for my birthday in July.... just to mix it up.

We also had lots of other junk food: Snickers, Twizzlers, Sour Gummi Worms, Chewy Jolly Ranchers, Popcorn, Cupcakes, Cheesecake, and my favorite of the night - Crunch & Munch, caramel covered popcorn with nuts.... so good. I took a photo with the all the junk but left my camera in the car so maybe I'll show you on another day.

There were various games - including some Wii action.

Showing off my new smile with Justin and James...

Brandon trying his best...

Nicole was already having a great night by the time we got there....

And, my photogenic husband....

April is National Primary Immunodeficiency Disease Awareness Month

I
've never heard of a Primary Immunodeficiency Disease Awareness Month but we got our first celebration underway at the hospital while mom was receiving an intravenous immunoglobulin treatment (IVIG).

Let's back up and start from the beginning.

Mom has been diagnosed with a primary immunodeficiency disease known as Hypogammaglobulinemia (also known as Common Variable Immunodeficiency, or CVI). She has very low levels of immunoglobulins (or antibodies) in her blood. These antibodies are what is supposed to fight off infections. Pretty much - my mom has been living the last two years without an immune system.

No wonder she has been so sick!

CVI can cause major health problems. When left undetected, it can cause major organ damage through the stress of chronic infections and cause some patients to need organ transplants. Immunodeficiency diseases can also be fatal. We are lucky that the doctors caught this so "early" (2 years doesn't seem early to me but apparently, in the immunodeficiency world, it is).

They don't know what causes it. Some think it is genetic. Others think it is acquired. (I'm pulling for acquired.) In all the research I've done the last two days I haven't been able to find a consensus. It doesn't really matter at this point how she got it. What matters is how we are going to fix it.

Well, there is no cure for CVI. She will always have very low natural levels of antibodies. So to boost her immune system (or really to give her one), she will have to receive monthly IVIG treatments. The treatment is given as a plasma protein replacement therapy (like she is getting blood but it is clear and full of lots of these anitbody things). This will help her maintain a normal immunoglobulin level and be able to fight off infections like you and I do everyday without even knowing about it. They have to administer treatments in the hospital and it takes about a 20-hour or so visit to receive the therapy and be monitored to make sure she doesn't have a reaction to the plasma.

Because the IVIG only temporarily maintains her immunoglobulin levels, she will have to receive these treatments monthly for the rest of her life. That may seem like a hardship for some but we are ecstatic that only one day in the hospital a month will keep my mom feeling good.

My mom returned home from the hospital a few hours ago. It takes the antibodies 24 to 48 hours to completely begin their work. Then, she should start to get better. The antibodies will start fighting away at the bronchitis and sinus infection and my mom will feel good for the first time in two years! Fingers crossed!

While this is very rare (1 in 50,000, I believe) I do want to take this tiny platform and let you know about this disease. If you or someone you know is constantly diagnosed with sinus infections, bronchial infections, gastrointestinal problems, and/or is diagnosed with adult onset asthma - please tell them about the possibility of a primary immunodeficiency disease. Too many people go years without knowing what is wrong with them and spend lots of money on medical care that just addresses the symptoms.

Thank you all for your warm thoughts. They are much appreciated! Keep them up as my mother's recovery continues. Hopefully we will have her back out on the tennis court in no time. She is already clambering about playing tennis in the Fall leagues.

And a big thank you to Dr. Spera.
I still haven't met him but he is our angel!

What You Don't Know About My Mom

It was July of 2006. I went to my mother for advice on which diet program I should begin to get the wedding day body I wanted. She raved about her past success with Weight Watchers and decided she would do it with me, too. She wanted to lose a lot of weight, plus this would give her the opportunity to visit with me at least once a week. And our journey began....

7 months later, I had lost 20 pounds and my mother had lost
over 60 pounds.
Incredible!

My mom and I on my wedding day....
She was walking most mornings and had taken up tennis. Lucas was giving her lessons and she had quickly become involved in tennis programs in two cities.

The weight just kept coming off and my mom was in the best shape she had been in since I was a little girl.

Then..... she got sick.

I have never written about this, partly because my mom is a very "anti-sick" person. She hates feeling bad, she hates complaining about her health, she doesn't want to go to the doctor, she doesn't want to talk about it, and she definitely doesn't want to have to plan her life around a sickness. She doesn't want to be the sick person. And I don't want her to be the sick person, either.

When sickness struck her, it struck hard. There are times when she can't walk across the room because she simply doesn't have the energy or the oxygen to make it. She coughs incessantly - that is brought on by any number of things including walking, talking, laying down - meaning she gets very little sleep.

This sickness has changed a lot about my mother. We used to talk on the phone everyday. This is virtually impossible now. Our conversations used to be long but have grown shorter and shorter as she inevitably begins coughing and quickly runs out of breath. We used to go shopping together all the time. That has ended for obvious reasons. It might not be a bad thing to end a lot of those shopping trips but they are certainly missed. We used to go on little day trips together and even took a family canoe trip just before she got sick.

My mom doesn't go to church or Sunday school anymore - both a social and spiritual routine that is vital to her. When she actually felt like she could make it out the door, she didn't want to disturb the others or be "the weird person" who is always breathing heavy, coughing, blowing her nose. This sickness has cut away at my mom's life and made her an unwilling prisoner in her own home.

For almost two years now, my mom has put her life on hold - for what? The doctors couldn't tell us. Mom ended up in the hospital every month or two - staying an average of five to seven days with each visit - while they ran tests, administered breathing treatments, and tried to figure out what was wrong with her. Each time results were inconclusive. They could find nothing wrong. We were probably the only people in the entire hospital praying that the doctors would find something, anything, even if it was bad.... just so that we would know what it was. Always nothing. But on the upside - she would leave the hospital feeling much better! However, her health would rapidly deteriorate once she got home.

A brief period of 'okay' health.
This marathon day probably took a big toll on her health.

Taking off my pants when I couldn't bend my knees. Good mom :)
She even made everyone these "Team Ashley" sweatshirts
Doctors guessed severe adult-onset asthma, chronic bronchitis, and allergies. She had major sinus issues and even had a sinus surgery. It didn't help. She has spent most of this time hopped up on steroids, puffing out of asthma inhalers, giving herself at-home breathing treatment, drinking cough syrup out of the bottle (not doctor recommended but immediate and short-lived results) - living in a daze.

The doctors here were running out of hope and my resolve was wearing thin - to say the least. I was tired of these "doctors" who kept giving my mother hope but delivered no results. Her doctors finally decided to recommend her to Vanderbilt. Thank you! A small ray of hope that some leading doctor in his field would finally figure out all our problems. This was our next course of action. Then, her doctor suggested she meet one more doctor here to see what he had to say. I didn't like this idea. My mind was made up. She was going to Vanderbilt. But she met with this infectious diseases doctor. He ordered more tests and I thought, 'here we go again.' Wrong.

After a couple of meetings in the hospital and office visits, my mother met with Dr. Spera yesterday. She walked in and he said,
"We found IT."

...
more info tomorrow and maybe a visit with my mom in the hospital. Don't freak out. We are happy she is there. :)

Words truly cannot express the relief and happiness we feel. This isn't over yet. But we see the light at the end of the tunnel and it is glowing bright!

This nightmare is coming to an end soon
and I'll have my mother back.
